Christmas with Betty

Welcome to Milkweed and Monarchs. I’m Dawn Klem, and today, I share a story that brings together love, tradition, and the lasting impact of holiday memories.

Christmas has always been a time of reflection for me, especially when I think about my mother, Betty. She adored the holiday, filling our home with warmth, decorations, and the kind of joy that made every Christmas feel magical. Even when life changed—when my brother and I grew up, when my father passed, and when she moved in with me—her love for Christmas remained constant.

In this episode, I take you back to one of the most special Christmases we shared—the year we returned to Hillsdale, my hometown, to celebrate in her house. It was the first time my daughters experienced Christmas at Grandma’s, and true to her spirit, she made it unforgettable. From the beautifully decorated tree to the heartfelt traditions, she created a holiday filled with love and meaning.

I also reflect on a quiet, snowy morning years later, when I made the decision to stay home from work and spend the day decorating a Christmas tree with her—just the two of us. That day became one of my most cherished memories, a reminder that sometimes, the simplest moments hold the deepest significance.

Join me as I honor my mother’s legacy, celebrate the traditions she passed down, and reflect on the ways in which love and remembrance shape the holiday season.
