Halloween

Welcome to Milkweed and Monarchs. I’m Dawn Klem, and today, I take you back to one of my favorite times of the year—fall.

Growing up in Michigan, I cherished the crisp air, the changing leaves, and the traditions that made autumn special. Halloween was a highlight, filled with simple joys—homemade popcorn balls, caramel apples, and the excitement of filling pillowcases with candy. It was a time before trunk-or-treat events, when neighborhoods felt close-knit and traditions were passed down.

But the most unforgettable Halloween? The first one with my daughters. Adopting them from Romania meant introducing them to American customs, and explaining Halloween to two little girls who barely spoke English was no easy task. Their confusion turned into excitement as they realized the magic of trick-or-treating—running from house to house, collecting candy, and embracing a tradition they had never known.

This episode is a reflection on nostalgia, family, and the joy of sharing traditions with the ones we love. Join me as I recount the laughter, surprises, and heartwarming moments that made this Halloween one to remember.
