Welcome to Milkweed and Monarchs. I’m Dawn Klem, and today, I take you back to the final chapter of my first year in the Navy—when my dear friend Cindy made the cross-country journey from Hillsdale to San Diego to live with me.

Her arrival transformed my small bungalow into a true home. With blankets, dishes, and thoughtful touches, Cindy and her mother helped create a space that felt warm and welcoming. But life in San Diego wasn’t without its surprises. From an unforgettable dinner that left me battling food poisoning to navigating the military’s strict sick-call procedures, I quickly learned that independence came with unexpected challenges.
